|Birth: ||Jul. 4, 1865|
|Death: ||Dec. 11, 1959|
Mrs. J.M. New will quietly observe her 93rd birthday Friday, July 4, 1958 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. I.C. Godsey.
No special observance has been planned, since "the boys have families of their own to take care of." Mrs. New said Tuesday.
Born Abbie Eviline Keith in 1865, she married Jacob Mayfield New January 22, 1889. Three children of the couple's nine died before Mr. New died in January, 1930.
The family moved to Truscott, Texas in 1897, and Mrs. New continued to live there after her husband's death until she "broke up housekeeping" and came to live with her daughter in Knox City in 1943. Until four years ago she frequently made extended visits with her sons.
Three years ago she fell and fractured her right thigh. But she says, it doesn't bother her at all now.
About all she is able to do is care for herself--comb her hair and put on her clothes. And she has a hard time remembering the days when she did put in long hours. At one time her husband farmed a large scale at Truscott, working 340 acres with horses, walking plows, the children, and sometimes some hired help. Mrs. New never found time to work in the fields, though. She was too busy sewing, taking care of her babies, washing, ironing and cooking--never knowing how many she would feed at meal time.
Mrs. New is a quarter Indian. Her mother's father was a full blood Indian, she said.
She has been a member of the Baptist Church since she was 15 years old.
Besides Mrs. Godsey, she has five sons. They are Marcus and Esker of Belen, N.M., W.W. of Scholle, N.M., Arlie of Willow, Okla., and Delbert of Delhi, Okla.
