John was the son of Moses and Betsy (Munsell)Avery. He married Mrs. Sarah (Cooper)Mitchell August 1821.
He enlisted at age 13 in 23rd Regiment of U.S. Infantry from Jefferson County, New York. He was in capture of Fort George; also of brigs "Adams" and "Caledonia", was prisoner at Battle of Foret Erie by Indians and taken to Canada-in charge of Jack Brandt. His freedom was bought by Adams and Ball, merchants at Twelve-Mile Creek.
The family came to Oakland County, MI in 1836, then to Greenbush Township, Clinton Co in 1838. They had several children; some serving in the Civil War.
