John was the son of Moses and Betsy (Munsell) Avery. He married Mrs. Sarah (Cooper) Mitchell in August 1821.
His paternal grandfather was Amos Avery.
He enlisted at age 13 in 23rd Regiment of U.S. Infantry from Jefferson County, New York. He was in capture of Fort George; also of brigs "Adams" and "Caledonia", was prisoner at Battle of Fort Erie by Indians and taken to Canada - in charge of Jack Brandt. His freedom was bought by Adams and Ball, merchants at Twelve-Mile Creek.
The family came to Oakland County, MI in 1836, then to Greenbush Township, Clinton Co in 1838. They had several children; some serving in the Civil War.
