LMU Mourns Loss of Former Volleyball Standout Kim Blankinship
Future LMU Hall of Famer Kim Blankinship dies Monday at age 31.

Los Angeles, Calif. - Loyola Marymount University Athletics is mourning the loss of former volleyball standout Kim Blankinship (1993-1996), who died Monday night from heart failure. Blankinship was recently named among the LMU Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2007 to be inducted this coming January.
Blankinship played for the Lions from 1993-1996, leading LMU to three West Coast Conference titles and three NCAA postseason appearances. Ten years ago, in her senior season, Blankinship led the Lions to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen and a final ranking of ninth in the nation. The overall record of 26-3, including a perfect WCC record of 14-0, still stands as the program's best season to date.
As a junior, Blankinship was named WCC Defensive Player of the Year. That 1995 season, she also set the LMU record for single-season service aces and service ace average. Her records of 66 aces and .68 per game still stand today.
In her senior campaign, Blankinship became the third athlete in LMU history to earn an All-America honor. She also earned LMU Female Athlete of the Year and WCC Co-Player of the Year honors that year.
Her contributions to the LMU volleyball program were so significant that Blankinship was tabbed for induction into the LMU Athletics Hall of Fame in January of 2007.
Her statistical marks still rank her in LMU's all-time top-10 in eight different categories including: service aces (1st, 157), digs (2nd, 1,161), kills (4th, 1,414), attacks (4th, 3,494), service ace average (4th, 0.39), kill average (5th, 3.54), dig average (6th, 2.91), and games played (8th, 399).
Services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday at Rolling Hills Covenant Church in Rolling Hills Estates, Calif.
