He is survived by his wife, Bernice; daughter, Pam Taylor (G.R.); sons, H.T. (Brenda) and Ronnie (Kathy) Childress; grandchildren, Cathy Williams, Cara Meyer, Cristen Taylor, Kevin and Brian Bowlin, Thomas and Allison Childress, Kristina Wilkinson, and Nikki Childress; and five great-grandchildren; sisters, Lucy Hall, Audrey Bryant, Bell Webb, Lou Higham; and his brother, Clemmon Childress. He served in the U.S. Navy, spending 14½months overseas in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. Tom was a past president of Rockville Ruritan Club, member of the Centerville Rescue Squad, active and faithful member of Berea Baptist Church.
