Mattie and a year older brother, Jessie, were born to the union of Ginger and Ella Jefferson Bowen. Her mother died when she was eight. Mattie Blackshear was raised in Navasota, Texas by her father (a butcher) in the household of her Uncle Tommie (a blacksmith) and Aunt Susie Smith. Mattie graduated salutatorian, Navasota High School and went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts, Education, Prairie View A&M University (1929); Master of Education, Texas Southern University and Master of Special Education, Texas Women's University. For 41 years, she was a dedicated Houston Independent School District teacher. She liked to crochet and was active in quilting, oil painting, coordinating flower shows, flower arranging, gardening, traveling, cooking and civic events. Most importantly, she enjoyed living by the Word of God (the Holy Bible). Mattie was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Hurbert. Left to cherish her memory is a devoted daughter, Donna Maria Reynolds (Rodney); two grandchildren, Maria and Evan Khalil Reynolds and a host of beloved relatives and friends. Her greatest legacy is her strong faith in God! People use to say her phone line was a prayer line. Folks who didn't know her would call for prayer. Read online: The Legacy of Mattie Blackshear. Mother Blackshear was always a seeker of Truth (John 14:6) and now she has gone from this earthly realm to her Savior's bosom!
