Wife of Willis (Bill) J. Adams.

Harriette J. Adams, resident of Ellerslie, GA, died on Friday, June 6, 2008 at St. Francis Hospital. A private graveside service will be held on Monday, June 9, 2008 at Main Post Cemetery, Fort Benning, GA., with Reverend Canon Richard Waller officiating, assisted by Reverend Terrence Keller, according to Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, Columbus. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday, June 8, 2008 from 4 to 6 p.m. Harriette was born July 12, 1922, in Columbia, SC, to the late Katharine Amaker Jennings and John Shepherd Jennings. In 1941, she met a handsome young army lieutenant, Willis “Bill” J. Adams, of Barnesville, GA, newly stationed at Fort Jackson, S.C., and in training for the rapidly unfolding war. They fell in love and married in Columbia, SC, on April 11, 1942, a union that would last 66 years. Harriette gave birth to a daughter, Judith Sheldon Adams, in 1943, and a son, John Willis Adams, in 1948. When Harriette and Bill married, she embraced the role of being the wife of a career Army Officer, nurturing and entertaining the families of Bill's fellow officers in whatever place in the world he served his country. She endured long periods of his absence, sending him to two wars, and moving households without him, all with the same grace and elegance that characterized her every action. In 30 years of military service, Harriette and Bill enjoyed tours of duty throughout the continental United States, but her favorite tour was at Schofield Barracks, HI, from 1959 to 1962. Harriette was preceded in death by her daughter, Judith Sheldon Adams, who passed away in 1967. She is survived by her loving husband of 66 years, Colonel (Ret) Willis J. Adams of Ellerslie, GA; her son, John W. Adams and his wife Maureen A. Adams, of Northfield, MA; her granddaughter, Katharine J. Adams of Cambridge, MA; and her grandson, Seth S. Adams of Northfield, MA; other relatives and friends. Raised a devout Episcopalian, Harriette was a communicant of St. George's Anglican Church in Columbus, a church she helped found in the early 1980's when the Episcopal Church moved away from her beloved prayer book. Although in the last few years Harriette could not actually attend church, her faith remained important to her, and her pastors brought her church services, which, of course, were followed with a nice meal. Harriette and Bill built their retirement home in Ellerslie in 1972, where they continued to make lifelong friends. Harriette will be sorely missed.

As a military wife you served your country as surely as any soldier on the battlefield. Thank you.
