Obituary for Preston Marshall Ensign
Source: "The Pantagraph"
NORMAL -- Preston Marshall Ensign, 94, of Normal, died Monday (May 8, 2006) at his home. He was an administrator at Illinois State University for 33 years and an active member of the community.

He was born in his home in Hudson on Feb. 25, 1912, a son of Robert A. and Grace P. Marshall Ensign. He was a direct descendent of James Ensign, one of the founders of Hartford, Conn.

He married Alice Louise Craig on Nov. 9, 1934. She died in February of 2004 after 70 years of marriage. Surviving are his daughters, Carol (Ronald) Barnhart, Tampa, Fla.; Judith (Joel) Brooks, Mesa, Ariz.; Nancy (Jay) Gillett, Indianapolis, Ind.; and Linda (Bob) Hageman, El Paso; one son, James Ensign, Normal; and one sister, Evelyn (William) Daggitt, Dayton, Ohio. Also surviving are 16 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.

Preston graduated from University High School and Illinois State Normal University. In 1935, he began his career with ``States Display,'' a commercial art business he started and ran for several years. In 1944, he accepted the position of business manager of ISNU (now ISU). With the growth of the university, his title eventually became coordinator of campus planning and he remained in that position until retiring in 1977.

He helped preside over the rapid expansion of the university campus and was instrumental in the planning construction of many of the buildings on campus including some of the first ``high rise'' dormitories in the country. He was known among his colleagues as the ``idea man'' or the dreamer concerning campus expansion. He had the idea for what eventually became the pedestrian underpass at Main Street and College Avenue.

Among his other interests in the community, Preston served as a chairman of the Normal Planning Commission for many years. He was a longtime member of the Young Men's Club of Bloomington, being the only person to serve two terms as president. His favorite hobby was photography and he was a member of the Koda Roamers Club. He treasured associations and friendships he made during his involvement with the Young Men's Club and the Koda Roamers Club. He was devoted to his family and also loved gardening, woodworking and traveling.

His funeral will be at 4 p.m. Saturday at Wesley United Methodist Church, Bloomington. The Rev. David Dees will officiate. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday at Kibler-Smith Memorial Home, Bloomington, and also an hour before the service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Mennonite School of Nursing at ISU; Wesley Methodist Church; or the Young Men's Club Youth Opportunity Fund.
