She later managed the shipping department for Excalibur Manufacturing in Pomona, CA, and managed the gift shop in a principal hotel in San Bernardino, CA.
Shirley and Lee moved to San Diego, CA, where Shirley enjoyed several years of retirement. Lee's job took them to Virginia, where they lived for 1½ years prior to moving back to Wisconsin to rejoin their family.Shirley enjoyed spending time with her very best friend (and husband) Lee, her family, flower gardening, and playing Scrabble, cribbage and canasta. She was an avid fan of the Milwaukee Brewers and the Green Bay Packers, as well as the San Diego Padres and the San Diego Chargers. Shirley was a member of St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church in Waupaca.
She is survived by her loving husband of 40+ years, Leon Horne; her three sons: Wayne (Jeannie) Altenburg of Iola, Eugene (Debbie) Altenburg of Waupaca, and Jerry (Laurie) Altenburg of Waupaca. Also surviving her is her brother: Gary (Patti) Roberts of Waupaca; two sisters: Audrey Briggs of North Miami, FL and Elaine (EuGene) Vaughan of Seymour, TN; and several nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, along with a very special friend, Jim Baird of Lomita, CA.
Shirley was preceded in death by both of her parents, James and Pearl Roberts of Omro; her brothers: James Roberts, Jr. of Omro and Marvin Roberts, Sr. of Oshkosh; her youngest son, David Altenburg of Wausau.
The Funeral Mass is tentatively scheduled for Thursday. Confirmed dates and times will be posted on Monday.
Interment of Shirley's cremains will be at a later date in St. Mary Magdalene Cemetery.
A memorial fund will be established. A special thank you to the Knights of Columbus Honor Guard and to the St. Mary Magdalene Parish Choir for their participation in the funeral mass.
I'd like the memory of me to be a happy one; I'd like to leave an afterglow of smiles when life is done. I'd like to leave an echo whispering down the ways of happy times and laughing times and bright and sunny days. I'd like the tears of those who grieve to dry before the sun of happy memories that I leave when my life is done...My love to everyone (author unknown).
