Visitation: Thursday, October 16, 2008 from 10:00am to 6:00pm in the chapel of Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home in Forsyth.
Funeral Service: Friday, October 17, 2008 at 11:00am in the chapel of Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home in Forsyth.
Interment will follow in the Forsyth Cemetery with full military honors.
Dr. James K. Cope, MD of Forsyth passed away on Sunday, October 12, 2008 at St. Vincent Health Care Center in Billings. He was 85 years old.
James was born February 16, 1923, the son of Harold and Eleonore (Neff) Cope in Akron, Ohio.
He attended and graduated from Bellaire High School in 1940. Following his graduation he attended Baldwin-Wallace College in Bera, Ohio and went on to Case Western Reserve Medical School in Cleveland Ohio, where he graduated in 1948. James was united in marriage to Bertha Bleth in 1941 in Livingston, Montana. Jim and Bert were married for 51 years. To this union three sons were born; James K. Jr., William M. and Richard T. Cope.
Dr. Cope interned in Salt Lake City for one year. His first practice was at Chico Hot Springs, MT. He then practiced with his sister Betty as his nurse, in Ekalaka, MT until 1951. Jim and Bert came to Forsyth, where he practiced until his retirement in 1993. Jim and Sharon M. Onstine were married on May 1, 1993 in Forsyth.
Dr. Cope served in the armed forces during WWII. He was a member and served as president of the Lions' Club and also served a term as president of the Montana Medical Association. He served for a time on the Forsyth School Board and the Rosebud County Hospital Board. He was one of the members of the Forsyth Country Club golf course who helped develop the golf course grass greens.
James was an avid hunter. He hunted extensively through North America which resulted in achieving a grand slam of North American sheep. He was the 54th hunter out of now 1,500 to achieve this feat. He also took two African safaris.
Surviving him are his wife Sharon Cope of Forsyth, three sons, James and his wife Connie of Forsyth, Bill of Billings and Dick of Ballantine. He is also survived by two step-daughters Kathy (Mark) DeCock of Forsyth and Jodi Giacomini of Billings. Also surviving are his brothers, Ellis, Jerry, Dick and David Cope all of Ohio; sisters, Betty Moullet of Miles City and Joann Speece of Ohio; four grandchildren Melanie (Chad) Johnson, Heather (Travis) Heindl, Rikki Cope and Keith Cope and their mother Rosa; six step grandchildren, Kaybree, Jordan, Cameron, Kayla, Colton and Caleb. He also has seven great grandchildren; Gabe, Mara, Taryn, Hadley, Reid and Kinsey Johnson, and Malena Heindl.
Dr. Cope was preceded in death by his first wife Bertha in 1992, two brothers, Bill and Bobby Cope, a sister, Jean Bleth and three special brothers-in-law and hunting buddies John Bleth, Bernard Allen and Bud Moullet.
