Loving husband to Debbie, loving father to Kelly. A dedicated recreational athlete, he played golf, racquetball, softball, baseball and basketball. Mr. Hoffman was a San Diego native who worked in law enforcement 22 years. He was diagnosed with ALS, known as Lou Gehrig's disease. Mr. Hoffman fulfilled a lifelong dream by earning his pilot's license and instrument rating, enabling him to fly recreationally in rented aircraft. He had a longtime allegiance to the San Diego Chargers. He played right guard in football at Patrick Henry High School in San Carlos. He married Debbie, his high school sweetheart, at 18. After working for a few years for Big Bear Markets, he joined the Sheriff's Department. Seeking more regular hours, he transferred in 1981 to the county Marshal's Office. He worked there until Dec. 31, 1999, when the Marshal's Office merged with the Sheriff's Department. Among his assignments: serving as a court bailiff, in prisoner holding tanks and in the field. Eventually, he was picked for the felony warrant investigations detail. After duty as a field-training officer, Mr. Hoffman transferred to the El Cajon division, where he rotated through the courts, holding tanks and the field. In addition to his wife and daughter, survivors include his mother, Shirley Hoffman of San Diego; sister, Debra Hoffman of Denver; and brother, Steven Hoffman of San Diego. Mr. Hoffman was an elder and longtime member of the Evangelical Bible Church in La Mesa, CA. (Excerp from UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER, Jack Williams).

"Gregg, it was a pleasure working with your sweet wife in La Mesa. It was also a pleasure to have met you. You are missed. Rest in peace."
