The son of Lewis & Catherine Hershey Bender and the husband of Elizabeth Mumper Bender, whom he married in 1851. He was the father to Samuel H. Bender, Mary E. (Bender) Fehl, Edward L. Bender, Lillie E. (Bender) Hess & Sallie (Bender) Fisher.
In 1860, he was a laborer living in Franklin Township, York County. He stood 5' 8" tall and had dark hair and dark eyes.
A Civil War veteran, he enrolled in Chambersburg March 22, 1865, as a substitute and assigned to Co. A, 91st Pa Inf, serving at the rank of private until honorably discharged with his company on July 10, 1865.
