Herbert J. Bertsch

BERTSCH, 87, of Lowell
Avenue, a retired Navy lieutenant
and an engineer at the former
Narragansett Brewery in Cranston
for 24 years before retiring in
1976, died yesterday at Roger
Williams Medical Center. He was
the husband of the late Anna C.
(Gross) Bertsch.
Born in Cranston, a son of
the late Christian and Anna
(Gaissert) Bertsch, he lived in
Providence since 1944, previously
living in Cranston.
Mr. Bertsch was a member
of St. Pauls Lutheran Church, and
a 50-year member of Albany
Lodge 49 B.P.O.E. He was a
member of the International
Union of Operating Engineers,
and a former member of the
Providence Turners Club.
He served 24 years on
active duty in the Navy before
retiring as a lieutenant, and served
6 years in the Navy Reserves.
HE leaves three daughters,
Emily L. Card and Marie C.
Carpenter, both of Providence,
and Claire J. Silva of Riverside;
two sisters, Freda Start of
Warwick and Caroline Heller of
Cranston; eight grandchildren, six
great-grandchildren, and two
great-great-grandchildren. He was
the grandfather of the late Edward
Carpenter Jr.
The funeral service, with
military honors, will be held
Highland Memorial Park
