Nicola Paul "Nicky" Ardizzone, 80, of 1004 N. Second St., died peacefully Thursday evening, Aug. 15, 2002, at the home of his daughter, Brenda Hamilton, 1507 E. Pleasant Valley Blvd. Apt. D., with his family at his side.

He was born July 15, 1922, in Altoona, a son of the late Franceso and Catherine (Giordano) Ardiszzone. He married Janet Carol (Davensizer) Smith, May 18, 1974, in Altoona.

Mr. Ardizzone was employed as a welder at Conrail from 1942 to 1982, retiring after 40 years of service.

He was a 1941 graduate of Altoona High School.

Mr. Ardizzone served in World War II as a private 1st class in the Army, where he participated in the invasion of Normandy. He received the Purple Heart Medal, the World War II Victory Ribbon, the American Campaign Medal, the Good Conduct Medal and the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with Five Bronze Stars.

He was a member of the Juniata VFW 8685 (Fort Apache), where he twice served as post commander of District 22. He was a member of the American Legion for 45 years and the Tyrone Cooties. He was a life member of the Cesare Battisti Club and a ember of the Bavarian Aid Society.

Mr. Ardizzone was a volunteer at Van Zandt VA Medical Center and the Hollidaysbrug Veterans Home beginning in 1963. He also enjoyed fishing.

Surviving are his wife; three daughters, Angela McFarland and her husband, Tom, of Altoona, Brenda Sue Hamilton of Altoona, and April Ann Smith of Altoona; three sons; Nicola Ardizzone and his wife, Kathy, of Altoona, Rick Allen Smith and his wife, Debra Kay, of Altoona and Wayne Scott Smith and his wife, April of Clayton, Del.; two sisters, Carmella Paviglianti and her husband, Paul, of Gibbstown, N.J. and Catherine Grove and her husband, Raymond Samuel, of Altoona; 13 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by an infant son, John Ardizzone; a son, Jimmy smith; two brothers Paul and Joseph Ardizzone; and a grandson, Ryan Smith.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today and 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Monday, Aug 19, 2002 at E. Merrill Smith Funeral Home, Inc., 315 N. Seventh Ave., Juniata. VFW services will be held at 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 19, 2002 at E. Merrill Smith Funeral Home Inc., 315 N. Seventh Ave., Juniata with the Rev. Edward Eckenrod officiating. Interment will be at Greenwood Cemetery, Altoona.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made tot he American Cancer Society, 1004 N. Juniata St., Hollidaysburg, PA 16648, or to the Home Nursing Hospice Program, 201 Chestnut Ave., Altoona PA 16601.
