Comer Basset was his parents first born child and weighed 14 pounds at birth. A wonderful son, brother, husband, uncle and father, who loved all his family, he was very much loved by all of them as well. He had a great sense of humor, could sing, dance, and even did Vaudeville, and joined the Circus at a very young age.
Comer was a WWI veteran, he was a Bugler in the Army. He was a carpenter by trade and a member of Woodmen of the World. He married Gertrude Copeland in Oklahoma City, OK. on June 4, 1920. They made Oklahoma City their home as newlyweds, but lived in Amarillo, TX., Cordell, OK., and Goose Creek, TX. also. He was very proud of his son Jean and in the summer would take him to work with him, his daughter Wanda Mae was the apple of his eye, he called her Maezie, he had over 19 happy years of marriage with Gertrude.
Houston, Texas is where he started building his family a house in late 1938, by March of 1939 he passed away with little more than half of the house finished. In the weeks after his death his neighbors came over and finished the house for my Grandmother. What a testament to the kind of man he was, from all I have learned about him, he would have done the same thing for family and friends.
He loved to take Sunday drives down to the gulf coast, music, and chocolate covered cherries. At the time of his death he worked at the American Can Company in Houston, this company made sure his 18 year old son had a full time job after his fathers death.
