RICHARD P. "DICK" ARENSBERG
(February 24, 1932 - February 28, 2011)
Richard P. "Dick" Arensberg, 79, longtime Atchison businessman died Monday, February 28, 2011 at Atchison Medicalodge Nursing Center.
Richard Pierre Arensberg was born February 24, 1932 in Atchison, Kansas the son of Pierre "Jiggs" and Mary Louise Martin Arensberg.
He attended St. Josephs Grade School graduating from Maur Hill Prep School in 1950. He attended Benedictine College and played football for one year in 1951. He and the former Emma Lou Keithline were united in marriage on July 21, 1952 at St. Josephs Church, Atchison, Kansas. Mrs. Arensberg preceded him in death on August 15, 2009.
Dick was involved with a variety of other activities, first employed by Hekelnkaemper Bottling Company and Luxra Manufacturing Company for a number of years until he went to work for his father at Arensberg Grocers in 1956, until 1968 when Dick and his brother, Pete formed a partnership named Arensberg's Food Center in dual locations of Cap of the Mall and 1413 Main Street. The partnership operated both locations until 1992 when the Main Street store was closed. In 1996 Dick retired and the brothers sold the Cap of the Mall store, thereby ending 103 years of Arensberg Food Stores in Atchison since 1893.
In addition to work, Dick was involved with other businesses such as a charter member of the board of directors of Valley State Bank and with others in 1972 of re-starting football at Benedictine College.
He was a member of St. Benedict's Church, Knights of Columbus Council #723, served on the board of director's of Maur Hill's Camp St. Maur, member of the Atchison Elks Club, Bellevue Country Club, and the Fellowship Club.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Lisa Arensberg in 1984 and a son, Martin "JoJo" Arensberg in 2000.
Dick Arensberg is survived by a daughter, Marcia and her husband Russell Noll, Oskaloosa, KS, a son, Richard Lee "Rich" and his wife Patty Arensberg, Overland Park, KS, a sister Sally and husband Bill Irons, Atchison, KS and a brother Pete and wife Barbara Arensberg, Atchison, KS, a daughter-in-law, Susie Arensberg, Grandview, MO, grandchildren, Craig and his wife Linda Arensberg, Andi and husband Dave Stone, Michael Arensberg, Mason and wife Becky Clark, U.S. Army Specialist Nicholas Noll, Lauren Noll, great grandchildren, Bailey and Zachary Brian Arensberg, Carson and Cameron Stone, Sean Clark,
Services to be held on Saturday, March 05, 2011 at 11:30 a.m., in the chapel of Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home with Rev. Gerard Senecal, OSB officiating. The body will be cremated following these services with burial of the cremains at a later date in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be for one hour preceding these services at the funeral home. Memorial contributions are suggested to Benedictine College Football program or Maur Hill-Mt.
