Bill Rogers Atkins Sr.
(January 25, 1936 - July 30, 2010)

Bill R. Atkins Sr., 74, of St. Joseph, MO, passed away Friday July 30, 2010 at a local hospital.

Bill was born January 25, 1936 in St. Joseph, MO, the son of Velma and J Marvin Atkins Sr.

He attended McKinley Elementary School and graduated from Benton High School in 1954. He was a charter member of Community Christian Church, serving in several treasurer rolls, as well as Deacon, Elder and Presiding Elder. He retired from the St. Joseph Police Department after thirty seven years of service, serving as a Police officer for the first eight years, then as a the supervisor of the City/County Communications Center for the next twenty nine years. During this time, he also held the position of the City of St. Joseph/Buchanan County Emergency Preparedness Director, as well as working in the TeleServ department.

Bill enjoyed reading, spending time with his family, doing outdoor work with his boys, as well as serving his church.

Bill married Ecil Rowena Ray on January 30, 1954 in St. Joseph. She survives him of the home. Additional survivors include five children, Vickie (Chuck) Chavez, Billy R. (Karen) Atkins, Jr., Jeffrey (Claire) Atkins, Gregory Atkins, and Elizabeth (Bob) Vannaman. One brother, J Marvin (Sharon) Atkins Jr., eighteen grandchildren, twenty great grandchildren, plus three on the way. Two sisters-in-law, Elizabeth (Rudy) Mejia and Ida Massey, and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Preceding him in death were his parents; Velma and J Marvin Atkins Sr., and father-in-law and mother-in-law, Clarence and Ecil Floreine Ray.

Services will be 2:00 p.m. Monday at the Community Christian Church with interment in Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be held after 1:00 p.m. Sunday at the Clark-Sampson Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions to the Community Christian Church.
