Obituary of Peter Earl Broocke
Portales News Tribune, Dec. 28, 1937.

Return Body of Pioneer Here for Burial:

Word was received here today that P. E. Brooks, pioneer resident of Roosevelt County, died this morning at Dumas, Texas.
The body will be brought to Portales tomorrow, and burial will be in the Portales Cemetery, Wednesday afternoon at 1:30. Rev. Joe F. Grizzle will be in charge of the interment service.
Mr. Brooks is well known among the old settlers here, as he homesteaded near here 30 years ago. He will be remembered as Pete Brooks.

A very young Peter Earl Broocke, age 12 to not quite 16 during the war, served with the Confederacy during the Civil War. His military unit was Captain Edward W. Halbach's Company, Local Defense Troops from King and Queen County, Virginia. Rev. Richard H. Bagby, pastor of Bruington Church was their commander.

In the early 1900s, he was a member of Bedford Forrest Camp #1606, United Confederate Veterans, in Portales, Roosevelt County, New Mexico, and attended meetings here. On the sign-in sheet, Peter Broocke described his unit as Horlbick's Virginia Home Guard. At the meeting of April 25th, 1907, he was appointed to a special committee to solicit funds to defray expenses of one delegate, if necessary, within the camp. At the meeting of Friday, August 23rd, 1907, he was elected Quartermaster.

It was Teresa Roane, Library Manager of the Museum of the Confederacy, in Richmond, Virginia who on May 21, 2010 patiently and kindly researched my question and discovered that although he was not listed in any rosters, the closest thing that she could find was indeed Mr. Broocke's unit!

Although Mr. Broocke's date of death reads December 26, 1937 on his headstone, his obituary, and his death certificate record the date as December 28, 1937.

The obituary spells his surname as Brooks; however, his headstone and his death certificate record it as Broocke.
