Mama Petite, a hippopotamus that has been on display at the Birmingham, Alabama Zoo since 1959, has died, zoo officials announced today.
The 50+ year-old hippo, one of the oldest zoo residents and one of the oldest hippos in the world was put to sleep in her outdoor enclosure Wednesday after several days of rapidly declining health.
"The Birmingham Zoo animal care staff made the difficult decision to ease Mama Petite's suffering," according to a news release.
Mama Petite arrived at the Birmingham Zoo in May of 1959. At the time of her arrival, she was estimated to be between three and five years old, as she was caught in the wild. During her time in Birmingham, she gave birth to nine babies. All are on exhibit at zoos across the country.
Mama Petite enjoyed bobbing for apples in her pool. She delighted three generations of zoo visitors. She lived a very long, happy and fulfilling life, a tribute to the staff and diligent care provided to her.
