Maurice Lee Nelson, age 73, of Carrollton, Missouri passed away Monday, January 20, 2003 at his home.
He was born October 20, 1929 in Westboro, Missouri, the son of Lee Nels and Dora Mae Howard Nelson. He attended North Polk Country School and graduated from Tarkio High School in 1947. Maurice attended Northwest Missouri State College and Northeast Missouri State College. He served in the United States Marine Corp during the Korean Conflict.
On December 26, 1952 he married Barbara Riggle at the Methodist Church in Maryville, Missouri. She survives at the home.
Maurice taught High School science in Leon, Iowa; served as High School Principal in Hopkins, Missouri, Hamilton, Missouri; and Maryville, Missouri; was the Extension Agent in Carrollton, Missouri from 1966 until 1972 when he became the Principal in the Carrollton School District until he retired in 1992. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Carrollton, Missouri, where he had served on the Board of Elders. Maurice had been a member of the Carrollton School Board, Carrollton Housing Authority Board, Planning & Zoning Board, Carroll County Fair Board; and the board of Carroll County Trust Company Bank. He was a member of Kiwanis; and an Honorary Warrior of The Tribe of Mic-O-Say of Pony Express Council, Boy Scouts of America.
In addition to his wife, Barbara, Maurice is also survived by one son, Michael Nelson and wife, Susan, Wathena, Kansas; two daughters, Janice Marxhausen and husband, Karl, Carrollton, Missouri, Denise Anderson and husband, Greg, Carrollton, Missouri; five sisters, Lyllis Vette, Westboro, Missouri, Marjorie Fetterer, Carroll, Iowa, Mildred Hurst and husband, Charlie, Tarkio, Missouri, Mary Ann Ohrt and husband, Paul, Westboro, Missouri, Debbie Martin and husband, Charlie, Tarkio, Missouri; one brother, Larry Nelson and wife, Linda, Warsaw, Missouri; five grandchildren, Amos Nelson, Issaquah, Washington, Seth and Mary Beth Nelson, Wathena, Kansas; Lauren and Sean Anderson, Carrollton, Missouri; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Kenneth H. Nelson, Westboro, Missouri.
Funeral services were at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, January 23, 2003 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Carrollton, Missouri with Reverend Eric Swyres officiating. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery, Carrollton, Missouri. Military graveside services were conducted by Veterans Of Foreign Wars Pence-Lovell-England Post #1773, Carrollton, Missouri.
Visitation was from 7:00-8:30 p.m., Wednesday, January 22, 2003 at Gibson Funeral Home, Carrollton, Missouri.
The family suggests contributions be made to the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Carrollton, Missouri in memory of Mr. Nelson. They may be left at or mailed to Gibson Funeral Home, 201 S Main, Carrollton MO 64633.
