OBITUARY: Death of Martin Aicher [communicated]
One of our best and esteemed citizens, Martin Aicher, was taken from our midst last Friday morning at 9:15.
Martin Aicher was born in Province of Bavaria, Germany, February 6, 1862; came to Oregon with his parents, brother and sister. They located in this neighborhood, where he lived until death called him away. His father died on January 29, 1900. Martin left us to meet his dear and beloved father in the Kingdtom of God's Glory.
He was under the care of doctors for over 18 months and not expected to leave so soon this poor world of troubles. In this short notice I will not refer to his qualities as a Christian, son, husband and citizen. His short life has been an open book where everybody could learn how to be agreeable to his Creator and his fellowmen. The good examples given by Martin Aicher will last. Needless to say, the regrets were universal in our community among Catholics and non-Catholics.
Funeral ceremonies were held at the Catholic Church, this city, Sunday morning. The large edifice could not hold all of the numerous friends of our regretted citizen.
Being one of the leading members of the Catholic Church, nothing had been spared to make the different cermonies, great and solemn. The decorations of the church could not have been better. The singing part was very good. Very Rev. Father Adelhem, O. S. B., late Prior of Mt Angel Monastery, delivered two splendid orations in English and German.
The Rector of the church was the celebrant, assisted by Fathers Adelhem and Otmar as deacon and sub-deacon.
Interment took place in the Catholic Cemetery of Gervais. I have never before seen such a long procession of pious and devoted friends accompaying one who had been so dear to all. At the grave the crowd was immense, coming from every direction. Our departed friend was an active member of the St. Jospeh Society of Mt. Angel. A large number of said society were present.
His old mother is still living. He leaves also a dear wife, three children, one sister, Mrs. Van Houton of Mt. Angel, and one brother. To his family and relatives we offer our heartflet sympathies. R. I. P.
