Weekly Gwinnett Herald Obituary 16 May 1877 Lawrenceville, Gwinnett County, Georgia
Note:Death of Rev. J. BradfordOur community was startled last Sunday evening by the intelligence that this aged minister had died suddenly at his home. He had not been more unwell than usual, and prepared to go to church at Prospect on that day; but feeling unwell after he got ready to go, told his wife that he had decided to remain at home, and she went on. After her return he seemed in good spirits and inquired about the meeting. He then lay down, and his wife went to an adjoining room to prepare dinner. In a few minutes she heard him exclaim 'Oh! my head.' She immediately returned to the room, and found the good man breathing heavily. He lived but a few minutes and died without a struggle. His death is supposed to have resulted from apoplexy.

He has for some months been afflicted with a cancer, and was impressed with the idea that he would have to suffer a slow, torturing death as it eat [sic] to the fountain of life. Hence, his family say, he continually prayed that he might be spared that affliction-his prayers were answered, for the monster came like a thief in the night.

He was buried at Prospect church, where he had long ministered to his neighbors in spiritual things, by the masonic fraternity! Not withstanding the short notice, a large congregation assembled at the church and a funeral sermon was preached by Rev. J. R. Parker.

Mr. Bradford was born-1799, and moved from South Carolina to Gwinnett in 1823.

In 1835 he joined the church and was licensed to preach in 1848 by Rev. J. W. Glenn, presiding Elder-and in 1852 was ordained Deacon by Bishop Capers.

For forty two years he was a faithful servant of his Master, and for nearly thirty years a faithful, zealous, and effective minister. He had the confidence of all who knew him, and inspired them with the conviction that 'all his serious thoughts had rest in heaven.'

We were struck with the appropriateness of the opening hymn at his funeral:

"Servant of God, well done,
Rest from thy loved employ;
The battle fought, the victory won,
Enter thy Master's joy."
