Mary Virginia Cagney
Born August 24,1920 in Boston, MA, to Marie Agnes O'Lalor and William Jacob Lauer, passed away on December 15, 2007, in Kingwood, TX, after battling a lengthy illness. Mrs. Cagney was married to Edward John Cagney on Feb. 14, 1944, at St. Patrick's Church in Washington, DC, a marriage that never ended. She is preceded in death by her parents and by her beloved husband. Visitation will be on Thursday, December 20, 2007, from 6-8 PM at Kingwood Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be on Friday, December 21 at 12 at Kingwood Funeral Home, followed by interment at the Houston National Cemetery, 10410 Veterans Memorial Dr., Houston, TX. After courageously battling a lengthy illness, MARY VIRGINIA CAGNEY of Kingwood, Texas, passed on December 15, 2007. She was born on August 24, 1920, in Boston, Massachusetts, to Marie Agnes O'Lalor and William Jacob Lauer, both of whom preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her husband and the love of her life, Edward John Cagney, of Chicago, IL, a sister and lifelong friend, Margaret Farrell of Boston, MA, her darling daughter Jeanne Marie, a granddaughter, and a great-granddaughter. Mary was also a 14-year breast cancer survivor, and was quite courageous through that battle as well. Mary was a veteran of World War II. She enlisted in the United States Navy and was a Communications Specialist Third Class upon her Honorable Discharge after marrying Ed in 1944. She was a part of the code-breaker group in Naval Intelligence based in Washington, D.C. Until late in life, she was active in the Navy Belles, WAVES National and the American Legion Post 410. Mary's name is registered with the Women in Military Service for America Memorial in Washington, D.C. She became a staunch advocate for mental health awareness after the onset of her daughter Jeanne's illness and championed causes that sought to change attitudes on mental diseases. Mary is survived by sons Edward Cagney of Houston, Texas; Richard Cagney of Lancaster, Ohio; and Philip Cagney of Powell, Tennessee; daughters Mary Ellen Misitigh of Kingwood, Texas; and Maura Leus of Cape Girardeau, Missouri; as well as ten grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. The family wishes to thank the staff of Compassionate Care, including Miki, Daniela, Alina, Jennifer, Kim, Denna, Manuela, and Tania for their tenderness, care and warmth in Mary's final days. We would also be remiss in not mentioning Mrs. Elaine Kindrick and Mrs. Lori Richardson of Amedisys Home Health Care, her home health care nurse, as well as the staff of Kingwood Medical Center, who were there for her in her final hours.
