A St. Louis-area native, he was the son of Alfred and Katherine Bardgett of the central St. Louis County suburb of Richmond Heights, MO. Judge Bardgett graduated from Little Flower Catholic Grade School (Richmond Heights, MO), St. Louis University and the St. Louis University School of Law. He also served in the U.S. Navy.
Judge Bardgett was appointed to the Missouri Supreme Court by Governor Warren E. Hearnes in 1970, and served on the bench until 1982, after which he returned to private practice. Judge Bardgett served as an attorney for more than 50 years.
He married the former Mary Jeanne Branch in 1956,and had three children as well as grandchildren from this marriage.
Judge Bardgett died on Nov. 29, 2008 in Jefferson City. His funeral Mass was held at St. Joseph Cathedral in Jefferson City, MO, concelebrated by Roman Catholic Bishop John R. Gaydos of the Diocese of Jefferson City, followed by entombment in the Catholic community mausoleum at Resurrection Cemetery there.
