Per my grandmother, Sylvia Brant Travis Jennings, Philip Brant wanted to anglicize his name and so removed the "d" from Brandt, as he considered the German pronunciation too harsh. Family history states that he enlisted in the Civil War and served as a drummer boy. Records are unclear, indicating service in the U.S. Marine Corps, as well as the U.S. Army.
