John Allen Alford was born May 1860 in Cherokee County, Alabama, son of Jackson Alford (1830-1900) and Mary Jane Perry Alford (c1831-c1880/1881), daughter of Alfred Gray Perry and Sarah Perry. Jackson Alford and Mary Jane Perry married about 1850 in Cherokee County, AL, first living with her parents in 1850. They had four children, two sons and two daughers, before the Civil War began in 1861.
Jackson Alford was a farmer from Turkeytown in Cherokee County, AL when he enlisted in the Confederate Army, 48th Alabama Infantry Regiment, 2nd Co G on May 10, 1862 at Gadsden, Alabama. The Jackson and Mary Jane Alford moved to near Caldwell in Burleson County, TX by 1870, with children, Elizabeth, Thomas Jefferson, Julia Ann, and John Allen Alford, born May 1860. So far, 1870 is the only information known about Elizabeth.
Near Caldwell, Jackson and Mary Jane Alford lived next door to the Burrell Smith and Mary A. Waltz Smith family, who had daughters Nancy M., age 16; Mary E., 14; Sarah, 12; and Frances, age 6. Also there was son, James, age 9.
By 1880, Jackson and Mary Jane Perry lived near Cameron, in Milam County. T.J. Alford was a widower, having first married F.P. Duncan on 22 Feb 1875 in Robertson County, but he lived back at home with his parents in 1880. Also in the 1880 household was daughter Julia Ann Alford Smith, with two children, widow Eliza B. Smith, age 6, and Henry J. Smith, age 4. John Allen Alford, age 20, also lived with them. Jackson Alford is included in the 1880 Milam County Census of Agriculture, renting a 200 acre farm, farming 40 acres with three horses. Mary Jane Perry Alford died after the 1880 Census was taken in Milam County, gravesite unknown.
In Robertson County at Bald Prairie, Thomas Jefferson Alford (1853-1927) married a much younger Frances Virginia Smith (1864-1958) on Nov. 10, 1881, at the home of J. Davis. Frances was the daughter of Burrell and Mary A. Waltz Smith, as given on her 1958 Death Certificate in Taylor County, Texas, where they moved to in 1905. Tom and Fannie Alford had seven children, including Benjamin Franklin Alford (1882-1968) who married Lula Mae McCown (1881-1918) at Bald Prairie in 1901 and they had ten children including two sets of twins, but only 8 children survived. Lula was the daughter of Robert Lewis McCown and Lucy Catherine Day of Bald Prairie, and Lula is buried at Bald Prairie Cemetery. Lula died in Feb. 1918, leaving Ben Alford with eight children, from infancy to daughter, Frances, age 16. In 1924, Ben moved his family to Eastland, Texas. The McCown's, John Berry McCown and Sarah Caroline Honea McCown, were early pioneer's in this section of Robertson County by 1855.
Jackson Alford (1830-1900) married the much younger Miss Mary Gregory (b. 1857) on Oct. 12, 1881 in Robertson County and they lived at Bald Prairie, given as 16 years at Bald Prairie in his 1899 application for a Texas Confederate Pension. The pension application was witness by son, T.J. Alford and by J.C. Davis (James C. Davis) husband of Julia Ann Alford Smith/Davis. Jackson Alford died around October 1900, according to when the last pension payment was made to him. His memorial is at Bald Prairie Cemetery.
James H. (Harvey) Murray, age 39, and Nancy M. Smith M. Murray, age 26, lived at Bald Prairie in 1880, with children, Dora E., age 6; Sarah E., age 4; and John T., age 1. Nancy M. Smith Murray was a sister to Frances Virginia Smith Alford. Another sister, I think, also lived at Bald Prairie in 1880, Martha E. Smith Davis, wife of James D. Davis.
John Allen Alford, about age 31, married Dora E. Murray, about age 17, on Oct. 11, 1891 and they lived at Bald Prairie for a time around her parents and then moved over to neighboring Limestone County at Oletha. They had two boys, Luther Allen and James Jackson. As given by a 1990 letter to Sarah May Barber Alford (1917-2002) of Eastland, TX from Glenice Perdue of Mansfield, TX, daughter of James Jackson Alford, her grandfather John Allen Alford died in 1895 from blood poisoning after jumping down on a nail while working on a house. Dora E. Murray Alford died in 1898 from pneumonia. The two young boys, Luther Allen Alford and James Jackson Alford, were raised by their grandmother, Nancy M. Smith Murray.
John Allen Alford's sister, Julia Ann Alford Smith, married (2)James C. Davis about 1885, probably at Bald Prairie. In 1900, their son James Watson Davis was age 13, and George was age 11. By the date of the 1900 Robertson County Census at Bald Prairie, Julia was a widow.
