BIRTH: His birth year comes from his pension file which says born 1761 and age 71 in 1832, but his tombstone say age 79 at death in 1837 (b. 1758). 1835 Pensioners list says age 83 (b. 1752). He was the son of Thomas Arthur of Bedford Co VA. whose will dated Feb. 17, 1799 probated Jan. 24, 1820 Bedford Co names him as a son. Will book E 5 p. 169

WILL: lost from courthouse files. son Azariah Arthur was the executor per file reference. Joel Arthur, administrator Ezeriah Arthur Oct. 18, 1837 Vol. D p. 201. Joel Arthur late of Jackson Co was proven by James Hughes, Asa W. Isham and William Buckley, subscribing witnesses thereto. Ezaria Arthur the executor in said will named granted adm. (bond given by Lewis Harmon and Peter MCain. $300) John Horton, Enoch Ewing and John Johnson ordered to appraise personal property. Case #150, Journal D. p. 201. Record book A p. 99

PENSION: Joel Arthur S16034. (Lengthy pension file) VA Line applied 19 Sep 1832 Jackson Co OH aged 71 born 1761 Bedford Co, VA and enlisted there and then in 1802 moved to Greenbrier Co VA for 10 years and then to Jackson Co, OH.

SOLDIER: American Revolution, Pension drafted and served 1780 about 4 mos under Capt. John Trigg, Lt. John Davis, Ensign William Hancock, Genl. Muhlenburg, Col. Maryweather, Maj. McClure. in Jun 1781 drafted for 3 1/2 mos. under Capt. Thomas Leftridge (Leftwich), Maj. Overstreet. witnesses Amos Jenkins and Benjamin Arthur. (crossed out Theophilis Blake and Joseph Horton). was born in Bedford Co in 1761 until thirty years since (1832) when he moved to Greenbrier Co where he resided about ten years when he moved to Jackson Co OH where he new resides and has resided about twenty years. Mrs. E. S. Moss of Williamsburg, KY said to be descendant of Joel in letter. said she read p. 622 McAllisters Militia Joel Arthur age 83 living in 1835 on Pension List. He marched through Richmond thence stationed between Little York & Norfolk, until sometime in the month of September, following he thinks he served 3 1/2 months at which time he was discharged.

Sons of the American Revolution Supplemental Appl #130571 approved by descendant for his service.

DEED: Theophilus Blake and Phebe his wife sold to Joel Arthur on Aug 3 1821 $100 W 1/2 of the NE 1/4 of Section One, TWP 5 (Jefferson) Range 18. 80 acres. DB A p. 82-83. witnesses Jacob Blake and Lewis Athur.

BIO: District No. 2. The Joel Arthur house on the hill a short distance west of it wasbuilt about 1816 and there is a tradition that one of his sons shot a deer at the lick nearby from the upstairs window on the west side. A grandson, Thomas Arthur, now owns the old homestead. Many other descendants live in the county. Joel Arter (this is the spelling on his tombstone) died Sep 15, 1837, aged 69 years. Nancy, his wife, preceded him No.v 16, 1835, aged 77 years. they were buried on the high point of the hill west of the house and a number of other pioneers lie beside them. The house descended to their son, Azariah, who died Oct. 8, 1886. Hanging Rock Iron Region by Eugene Willard Vol. 1 1916 p 393 and others.

NEWS: The Times-Journal Nov. 16 1997 has Opinion Cartoon that says. Here rests a Revolutionary War Soldier, Joel Arthur, to whom we are indebted for our Independence. He died in Jackson County in 1837 and was recently honored there with a new Marker for Valor and Service to his Country.
