George was born to (John Wilhelm) William and Mary Ann McGinnis in Baltimore, Maryland.
He was in the Quartermaster's Department of the US Army during the Civil War. After leaving the army, he returned to Baltimore and for 36 years worked as an agent for the Adams Express Company in Baltimore. After retiring, he worked in the ticket office of the Maryland Theatre also in Baltimore. He was very active in the St. Cecelia's Catholic Church which hosted his funeral mass.
He married Mary E. Walter (no relation) on 11/5/1866. He and his wife had ten children. He generously purchased the family plot at New Cathedral and oversaw the grave transfers of his father, mother, grandfather and children when the original Pro Cathedral cemetery was closed.
