Frank Martin Charles
Birth: Sep. 27, 1894
New York, USA
Death: Jul. 21, 1918, France

Soldier, Private, United States Army, WWI. Frank M. Charles was raised in West Hamilton Beach, NY. Pvt. Charles was a machine gunner with Co. B of 307th Regiment, 77th Division. This division was comprised mostly of courageous men from the New York City area.

During the build up to what was to be the last German offensive of the war, The Second Battle of The Marne, Private Charles position was compromised, overrun, and taken, by German troops. This gallant American, Private Frank M. Charles, and his captain, a Captain Barrett, were bayoneted to death by the kaiser's troops.

Frank M. Charles was the first WWI combat mortality from the greater Howard Beach, NY community. The Frank M. Charles Post of the American Legion, Howard Beach, NY is named after him. Frank M. Charles Memorial Park in Howard Beach, NY, a part of the Gateway National Park, is also named in his sacred memory.

My thanks to my friend Sharon M. for sponsoring this memorial. Her grace and thoughtfulness is one of the sterling hallmarks of Find A Grave.
