Birth: 1934
Death: Feb. 21, 2005

DANIEL ALVAREZ Age 70 of Calumet Township, passed away peacefully February 21, 2005 surrounded by family and friends at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Daniel was born and raised in Gary, IN. He attended Lew Wallace High School. It was there that he played football and basketball and was a key member of the 1953 NWIHSC Championship Team. He attended Purdue University with the assistance of an athletic scholarship and played basketball and football all four years. He was honored with athletic awards in both sports. He was also a member of the Delta Tau Delta social fraternity. Upon graduation Daniel received an offer to play professional football for the Philadelphia Eagles which he turned down in order to become a family man and to further pursue his education. He graduated from Indiana University with his Master's Degree in Physical Education. Daniel used his talents to teach at Calumet High School. There he was a golf coach and assistant football coach. During these years he was also a member of the Indiana State Basketball Referees Association. As a man with many interests, Daniel later switched gears and became the proprietor of a few businesses in Northwest Indiana before his retirement. Daniel was charismatic, altruistic and a man of many talents. Most importantly, he loved his children and family. In his son, Danny, one can see his art of investing and his love of antique shopping at auctions. In his daughter, Laurie, one can see his sense of adventure, spirit and enthusiasm for sports. In both of them one can see his intelligence, compassion and generous heart. Daniel enjoyed sports of all types, fishing and spending time with his family and friends at his son's home. He received a liver and kidney transplant in 1996 and another liver transplant in 1997. He was a strong advocate for donor awareness and hepatitis C education. In 2000, Daniel was a member of Team Illinois and participated in the Transplant Olympics where he finished at the top for his age group in a 5K race. As a display of love, his son donated a kidney to him in 2003. Daniel had a will to live and continued to fight even when his body no longer could. He made an impact on many and will be dearly missed by all who knew him. Daniel was preceded in death by his daughters Deborah Anne and Suzanne Marie, his sister Maria Alvarez, his parents Manuel and Ludivina Alvarez, his grandparents and canine companion, Scooter. Daniel is survived by his wife of 49 years and high school sweetheart, Nancy; son Daniel William Alvarez of Monticello, IN; his daughter Laurie Anne of Calumet Township (previously of Chicago, IL); his brother Manuel Alvarez of Las Vegas, NV; his aunt Josephine Ruiz of Chicago, IL; sister-in-law, Sandra Hirsch of Constantine, MI; his dear cousin Pat (John) DeVinney of Indianapolis, IN; dear friends, Frank (Sandra) and Terry (Sharon) Trapane, Jimmy Cope, Greg and Jan; his canine companion, Seve, his granddogs, Bandie, Pollie and Ginger; along with many cousins, nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be held Friday, February 25, 2005 at 11 a.m. from Calumet Park Funeral Chapel, 7535 Taft St. Merrillville, IN 46410, 736-5840, with interment at Calumet Park Cemetery. Visitation will be held Thursday, February 24, from 2-8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the American Heart, Liver or Kidney Foundation.
