Alphonse L. Abair, 82, of 453 East St., a former area ballplayer, died in Ludlow Hospital on Sunday. He was a retired 32-year forklift operator and shipping clerk for the former Chapman Valve Co. of Indian Orchard, and retired in 1974. Born here, he was a lifelong resident. He was a communicant of St. John the Baptist Church, and a member of the parish's League of Sacred Heart Society. He was a semi-professional baseball player, and played for the former Ludlow Whippets in the late 1920s and early 1930s. He also played hockey. He leaves his wife of 60 years, Gertrude M. Gokey; three sons, Leon H. of East Longmeadow, Kenneth E. of Sturbridge, and Philip L. of East Longmeadow; a daughter, Lucille R. Moquin of Windsor, Conn.; a sister, Flora Goodell of Twentynine Palms, Calif.; 17 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. Another son, Richard Abair, died in 1983. The funeral will be Thursday morning at Ratell Funeral Home and the church, with burial at St. Aloysius Cemetery in Indian Orchard. Calling hours will be Wednesday afternoon and evening.
