|Death: ||1962, USA|
Mercedes Gonzalez Melnicoff, known as Peggy to family and friends. She met Louis Melnicoff , and they married and owned "Mellon Studios" in Washington, D.C. and specialized in portrait photography. Peggy and Louie never had any children but had an extended family that cared a great deal for both of them.
Peggy developed Breast Cancer and had extensive surgery and volunteered for one of the first experimental chemotherapy programs in the early 1960's. She entered the program with full knowledge that she would not survive and that the doctors would withhold pain medication during the course of treatment. In the end she was hospitalized and given medication to make her last few days of life bearable. Peggy stated that her reason for going thru this ordeal was so that the doctors could learn more and that other woman would have better treatments for Breast Cancer.
Peggy is my Great Aunt and I witnessed the tremendous physical pain she endured in her final days. She would be most pleased with medical advances that have allowed woman to survive Breast Cancer and most certainly would have been an advocate for early detection. Her sister, Mabel Shumate (1908-1998), was a nurse and cared for Peggy during her ordeal.
Peggy was the daughter of Carrie Wilson Long (1881-1965) and also had a sister Letha Fay "Tillie" Dylewski (1909-1953).
May God Bless and protect you as you are truly an unsung hero of your time. In your honor, our daughter is named Peggy.
