Edwin was the son of Samuel E. and Diana (Mitchell) Alden. He enlisted in Co. F, 42nd Massachusetts Infantry on 15 July 1864, and he was mustered out on 11 November 1864.

He first married Elizabeth R. Castlie Clarke. She died in 1887 in Chicago, Illinois. He then married Martha Hobbs on 19 July 1893 in Worcester, Massachusetts.

Edwin died in the Milwaukee Veterans' Home a little over a month after his father died there. They are buried in the same section.
