John Adair was the son of John Adair and Mary Katherine Willhide Adair. He was the sixth of eight children. John was a screen, stage, radio, and television actor. He met and married actress Gertrude M. Collins, stage name Jane Lowe. John happened to be In Mansfield at the Casino theatre at a critical moment. The stagehands were disagreeing and quit, just like that. John was prevailed upon by the management to be stagehand and recalls that an outdoor background was needed for the play and no scenery, was available so to supply the necessary background John went out in the country and secured real trees. While he was still serving as stage manager, fate intervened again. The comedian for the play, "Polly of the Circus" failed to put in appearance, so John was recruited to take his role. He played it so well that forever after he was an actor. Soon a romance began between the "leading lady" and recruited actor, which culminated in the marriage of Jane Lowe and John Adair at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel C. Race, Douglas, with Rev. A.T. Reasoner, of the Episcopal church, performing the ceremony. They toured and starred in comedic plays in the 1910s - 1930s. Johnny Adair went on to films and television. They played in "Texas", "Paid in Full", "Forty-five Minutes from Broadway", (which John claimed as his favorite play) and many others. The extent of their repertoire can be imagined when it is recalled they gave two plays, weekly and were in Mansfield, OH for various summers for a total of 1100 weeks. Then Jane and John decided to form their own stock company and went to Miami, Florida. Soon they located on Broadway and starred in many shows. Johnn's film roles include 'John Doe Jr.' in "Muss 'em Up" (1936) and 'Dan Meredith' in "The Ramparts We Watch" (1940). He was in the original casts of "The Cradle Will Rock" (1938), and "Sadie Thompson" (1944) on Broadway.
