Hazel was born to Andrew Marion Thornberry and Mahala Jane Blanchard at Mt. Vernon, Lawrence, MO. She was one of eight children.
As a child she moved with her family to Natoma, KS. It was here she received her schooling and grew to young womanhood.
On Dec. 29th, 1926 she was married to Alfred Franklin Brown, at Smith Center, KS. Two children were born to this marriage, Eulalia Bettina Brown b. 1931 and Leonard Leon Brown b. 1935.
After their marriage they farmed south of Woodston, KS for a few years and then moved to Hotchkiss, Co. Later to Dragerton, UT, then to Stockton, KS, where they were living when Alfred F. Brown died Mar. 17th, 1953. Hazel continued to live at Stockton after her husbands death. In 1957 she moved to Orleans, NE, where she lived until her health necessitated her moving to Auburn to be near her son, Leonard.
Hazel loved to crochet and made beautiful lace doilies and she also enjoyed quilting. She and her Mother in-law Carrie B. Brown quilted Ella Crain's quilt, (Alfred's cousin) in the winter of 1931. She also liked to bake bread and to raise a garden, in her early years.
