Birth: 1846
Clontarf
County Dublin, Ireland
Death: 1851
Newark
Essex County
New Jersey, USA

James Donnelly was born about 1846 in Ireland, perhaps in Clontarf, County Dublin, the son of Michael Donnelly and Honorah "Norah" Winn Donnelly Williams. He immigrated to America with his parents fleeing the Potato Famine. The family settled in Newark, Essex County, New Jersey where his younger brother Thomas John Donnelly was born. James' father died in 1850, and James, still a child, a little while later. His brother Thomas went to live with his aunt and uncle, Mary Winn Dardis and John Dardis, Jr. Two years after Michael's death, James' mother married Elisha Williams of Newark and had more children. James had at least three younger half-siblings born after his death.

James was probably buried at Saint John's Roman Catholic Church in Newark. His remains and the remains of other poor Irish immigrants were later moved to nearby Saint Michael and ultimately to Holy Cross Cemetery in North Arlington, Bergen County, New Jersey where they lie under a large Celtic cross that marks the spot where those buried at Old Saint John's Catholic Church in Newark between 1835 and 1910 were re-buried at Holy Cross in 1960.

I hope someone can discover from where in Ireland the Donnellys come.

DNA testing reveals the Donnellys are descended from the powerful Irish clan of Ui Neill who claimed the High Kingship of Ireland from the 7th to the 11th century AD. DNA testing also reveals Thomas Donnelly and his direct male descendents are of the patrilineal clan of "Oisin" (pronounced "O-sheen") (Y-chromosome clade R1b). Oisin lived about 40,000 years ago in the Celtic area of Western Europe. Oisin was one of about seventeen men alive at that time from whom all people alive today are descended.
