San Antonio Express-News, April 25, 2003:

Sister Ambrose Aherne, 92, entered into eternal life on Wednesday, April 23, 2003, at the Incarnate Word Retirement Community, San Antonio, TX. Sister Ambrose was born Catherine to Robert and Teresa (Walsh) on June 21, 1910 in Dublin, Ireland. She entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word on December 10, 1931, professing first vows in 1934 and perpetual vows in 1939. Sister Ambrose devoted her life to the education of young people. After ministering for many years to the ill at St. John's Hospital in San Angelo, she earned her Bachelor of Education degree in 1969 from Incarnate Word College (now the University of the Incarnate Word - UTW).

Her many teaching posts included schools in Fort Worth, Weslaco, San Antonio, Bandera, Seguin, Del Rio, Kerrville, New Orleans, Lubbock, and Corpus Christi. She retired in 1976, only to discover another skill - seamstress. "She loved to knit, crochet and sew. We used to sell her things in the gift shop," recollected her niece and sister in Christ, Sister Mary Teresa Conroy, who followed Sister Ambrose into the convent. "Ever since she visited once when I was a child, I wanted to be like my aunt. She sent me a picture of the Incarnate Word and an invitation to join the Congregation." Sister Ambrose is remembered as a soft-spoken, gentle woman who enjoyed her life and welcomed her death and rebirth into the Kingdom of God.

She is mourned by niece, Sister Mary Teresa, and her other sisters in Christ; as well as her brother, Brendan Aherne of Canada; her sister, Rosaleen Casey of Ireland; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives in Ireland, Scotland, and Canada.

The rosary service is scheduled for Friday, April 25, 2003, at 6:30 P.M. and mass of christian burial will take place Saturday, April 26, 2003, at 10:00 A.M. at the Chapel of the Incarnate Word, San Antonio, TX, with interment immediately following at the Convent Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Incarnate Word Retirement Fund. Condolences may be sent to the family and Congregation via the Internet at www.theangelusfuneralhome.com. Funeral arrangements provided by The Angelus Funeral Home.
