Magician. Debuted in Aberdeen, Scotland in the 1830's. A/K/A: "The Caledonian Conjurer"; "The Great Wizard of the North" (a title he claimed had been bequeathed to him by Sir Walter Scott, the original Wizard of the North) Greatly respected by Harry Houdini who made a pilgrimage to his grave in Scotland.Traveled with his show to the United States, Canada, most European countries. First western show business act to perform in Russia. First magician ever to pull a rabbit out of a hat! Wives: Hannah and Angeline (Leona); sons: John Henry Jr., Oscar, and Philip (Prentice); daughters: Alice and Helena, nieces: Margaret (Nellie) and Isabella Jean (Bella); mistresses: Antonia (Louisa) and Miss Prentice. Died in Darlington, Scotland.
