Mrs. T. Abercrombie

After a long and useful life there passed to eternal rest on Sunday, October 8th, 1933, Mrs. Thos. Abercrombie, whose maiden name was Eliza Jane Knott. She was the only surviving member of the family of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jas. Knott (Rachel Taylor 1811-1883) and was born 85 years ago last June, the first white child born in Euphrasia township.

She was married to the late Thomas. Abercrombie in 1865 and they celebrated their golden wedding in 1915. The late Mrs. Abercrombie was the mother of twelve children, with nine of the family living. They are Mrs. S. S. Burritt and John of Kimberley; Taylor and Mrs. Wm. Lawson in Euphrasia; Elwood, Nicholas and Mrs. Bothwell of Vancouver; Robert and Mrs. Herman Ferrier of Barrie. Three predeceased her Mrs. Marshall, Hugh Morley and an infant daughter. She is also survived by 31 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

The funeral was held on Tuesday, October 10th, from the church to Markdale cemetary (sic). Rev. S. McAuslin, assisted by Rev. J. S. Wilkinson, both old friends, preached a very comforting sermon. The hymns were old favorites, the choir singing "I Will Sing You a Song of a Beautiful Land." By special request the flowers were picked from the gardens and the profusion of bloom was an evidence of the love and respect of which Mrs. Abercrombie was worthy.

Mrs. T Abercrombie was always ready to respond to the call for help. Where there was sickness, while she was able, she had been of great benefit and help to the people. Living beside the school for a great number of years she has seen decades of children coming and going. In little accidents and illnesses the children went to her to be doctored.

Among relatives at the funeral were: Mrs. speck, Mrs. Rennie and Raymond of Walters Falls; Mrs. Emerson Brown, Mr. Wm. Abercrombie, Mrs. Wm. Knott, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Knott, Mr. and Mrs. R. J. Stuart of Thornbury; Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Clugston and Jean of Sligo; Mr. and Mrs. Harry Hawken, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Hoggard, Mr. and Mrs. John McArthur and Mr. Christopher Knott of Meaford; Mr. and Mrs. Ted Henson and son, Jack, Mr. Henson, sr., and Melvin McLean of Barrie; Mr. Edward Baker and Mrs. Wm. Trimble of Flesherton; Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Abercrombie of Griersville; Mr. Rutledge Hewson, Miss G. Hewson of Thornbury; Miss Elda Rourke of Heathcote; Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Cooper of Cooper's Falls; Miss Nettie Abercrombie of Shelburne, and Mr. Buster Marshall of Barrie.
