7th Kansas Governor. He served as Captain and commander of the 17th Independent Battery New York Volunteer Light Artillery during the Civil War, being brevetted Major, US Volunteers for his service. A cousin of noted suffragette Susan B. Anthony, he served as Governor of Kansas from 1877 to 1879.
