Beneath the dates of birth and death is a vertical line of Chinese characters: "Grave of Chu (family name) Poy Wah (personal name)." The term "shee" (or "shi" in Mandarin) indicates a woman's own surname. In traditional Chinese order, Chu Shee Wong would be called "Wong Chu Shee," literally, "a woman of the Chu clan married to a man of the Wong clan" or "Mrs. Wong née Chu." In former times, it was unusual for a woman's personal name to be mentioned on a headstone.
This headstone also includes the name of her husband and her husband's ancestral village in China (please see his memorial for more information).
