Emma Anna Hlousek Urban was born February 11, 1905, in Fairfax, South Dakota. As a very young girl, she moved with her mother and an older sister to a homestead southwest of Colome. Here the qualities of hard work, independence and thriftiness were instilled in her life.

On April 14, 1926, Emma married Jerry Spinar in Colome. Together they raised their family of four children while establishing their farmstead two miles east and one and a half miles south of Colome. They lived there until retiring and moving to Winner in 1971.

Emma was an active member and generous supporter of the United Methodist Churches in Colome and Winner. She was also a member of the Rebekah Lodge of Colome and the Roseland Chapter #113 of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was involved in several social organizations including bridge and other playing-card clubs. Family and friends remember her as an excellent cook and enjoyed the bread, rolls, kolaches and many desserts she loved to share with them.

Emma is survived by her four children, Leo Spinar and his wife Elaine of Brookings, Irene Fischer and her husband Vern of Rapid City, Anita Calhoon of McLaughlin and Melvin Spinar of Sioux Falls; two grandsons; eight granddaughters; and fourteen great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Jerry in 1988; her sister, Mrs. Carrie (Clifford) Russell in 1985; her step-brother, Frank Urban, Jr. in 1975; and a great-grandson, Charles Murphy in infancy.
