Emma Anna Hlousek Urban was born February 11, 1905, in Fairfax, South Dakota. As a very young girl, she moved with her mother and an older sister to a homestead southwest of Colome. Here the qualities of hard work, independence and thriftiness were instilled in her life.

She was also a member of the Rebekah Lodge of Colome and the Roseland Chapter #113 of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was involved in several social organizations including bridge and other playing-card clubs. Family and friends remember her as an excellent cook and enjoyed the bread, rolls, kolaches and many desserts she loved to share with them.
