A simple woman and lover of nature, Yvonne's desire was to be cremated and her ashes scattered in the Mississippi River in the Quad Cities.
Memorial services are planned for Indianapolis and the Quad Cities; please contact the family for details.
Donations may be made in honor of Yvonne to the School of Nursing, University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa.
Yvonne was born Dec. 9, 1930, in Carroll, Iowa, to Frank F. Hoffman and Leona F. (Smith) Hoffman. Her family moved several times during her childhood, living for a time in California as well as Iowa, and she attended a number of schools before graduating from Carroll Public High School in 1948.
In 1952, she received her RN from Des Moines Mercy School of Nursing in Des Moines, Iowa. She traveled the United States, working as a nurse at a number of hospitals including ones in Denver, Detroit, Cleveland, Palm Beach, and Washington, D.C.
In 1957, she received her BSN from the State University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa. Around this time she met a Korean War veteran and law student, Albert Jackson "Jack" Allen, while they were both working at the Psychiatric Hospital at the University of Iowa. They married on June 15, 1957, in Iowa City and honeymooned at a cabin at Palisades-Kepler State Park in Iowa.
The couple moved to Garner, Iowa, and Yvonne worked in the county hospital in Britt, Iowa. A son, Albert John, was born in Britt on July 7, 1958, and another son, Robert George, was born in Britt on Aug. 20, 1959.
The family moved to Des Moines, Iowa, and then Ames, Iowa, where a third son, Delbert Charles, was born on Oct. 24, 1962. In 1965, the family moved briefly to Bettendorf, Iowa, and then on to Davenport, Iowa.
Yvonne was a devoted mother who encouraged her sons to be themselves and to complete college. She was very proud of all her sons and their many accomplishments. In Davenport she continued her nursing career, amongst other things working as a nursing instructor at St. Luke's School of Nursing in Davenport and head nurse at Moline Lutheran Hospital. She also was very involved in the Bettendorf Community Theater and the Genesius Guild in Rock Island, acting, directing, and helping in other ways.
Unfortunately, financial difficulties, religious incompatibilities and personality differences caused Yvonne and Jack to become estranged, and in 1978 or 1979 they were divorced.
In the early 1980s, Yvonne moved from Davenport to Cedar Rapids, where she worked as a nurse on the adult psychiatric unit at St. Luke's Hospital, and later on the psychiatric units for children and adolescents. Yvonne received great satisfaction from her work with children and adolescents, and she firmly believed that she had a lasting, positive influence on a number of her patients.
Beginning in the 1980s, she suffered a number of health-related problems. The sudden death of her ex-husband in 1993 was upsetting to her, as was the death of her mother in 1995. After a 40-year career as a nurse at more than 25 hospitals, Yvonne retired in 1993 because of physical disability and continued to live in Cedar Rapids. She took a number of trips and cruises with friends before her health ended her traveling days.
She lived for a time in Cedar Rapids with her youngest son, Delbert Charles, until he died in January 2001. Shortly after that, she moved to Indianapolis to be closer to her eldest son, Albert John, or "A.J.," and his wife, Kathy Maeglin.
Up until her death, Yvonne enjoyed reading fiction, watching ice skating and reality TV, listening to classical music, and visiting with her family.
She will be missed very much.
In lieu of flowers, gifts in her memory may be directed to The University of Iowa Foundation College of Nursing, Levitt Center for University Advancement, P.O. Box 4550, Iowa City, IA 52244-4550.
