Celebrating the Life and Aloha of John F. Berger: John was born April 13, 1925, to Albertina (Stumpf) and Nick C. Berger, in Mandan.

His entire career, including service in the U.S. Army in World War II, was as a railroad worker as telegrapher and communications or station agent.

He married Ida Stroh in 1953 and they had four children. Late in their retirement, they moved to Bismarck, and in July 2013 to Sioux Falls, S.D., to be cared for by family, especially their granddaughter, Abigail and her fiance, Dan Breit. Ida passed away in September.

Ida and John celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 2013, and had been members of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Mandan for over 50 years.

An avid hunter, fisherman, gardener and numismatist, he also took an interest in politics. He made a variety of fishing supplies, which he sold to retail stores and from his hobby shop in Mandan.

John passed away on March 10, 2014, in Honolulu. He is survived by his children, Ramona (Scot Hanson), Shoreview, Minn., George (Debra Reid), Sioux Falls, Bernadette, St. Louis Park, Minn., and the Rev. John, Honolulu; his grandchildren, Andrew and Abigail (Dan Breit), Sioux Falls; Ida's sister-in-law, Eleanor "Laura" Stroh and family, Bismarck; and his niece, Anita (John Kavali), Bahamas, and family.

He was preceded in death by Ida; his parents; his sisters, Elizabeth (her husband Natale Frajola) and Mary Simson; and Ida's parents and her brother, George Stroh and her sister, Olga Stroh.

John's ashes will be laid to rest after a memorial Mass at St. Joseph's Church, Mandan, on a date to be arranged in spring or early summer, which will be announced in another notice.
