PAYSON, Ill. -- Mrs. Gertrude L. Leavitt, 94, of the Good Samaritan Home in Quincy, formerly of Payson, died at 8 a.m. Thursday (June 9, 2011) in the home.
Born March 1, 1917, in Fall Creek Township, Gertrude was a daughter of August and Nellie Mewmaw Feil.
She married Elzie M. Leavitt May 27, 1939, in Hannibal, Mo. The Leavitts lived on a farm on Route 57 until May 1, 1982, when they moved to Payson. Elzie died Sept. 3, 1987.
Gertrude attended Fall Creek Grade School and was a 1934 graduate of Seymour High School in Payson. A longtime member of Payson Christian Church, Gertrude was active with vacation Bible school, taught junior high Sunday school and played the organ for Sunday worship for many years. Gertrude was also active as a leader with 4-H and an avid supporter of the Payson Volunteer Fire Department.
Survivors include many loving nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Leavitt was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Elzie; two brothers, Everett Feil and Dave Feil; and two sisters, Edna Wysong and Josephine Troutner.
SERVICES: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in the Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home, Payson, conducted by Pastor Tom Worstell. Burial will be in Quincy Memorial Park.
VISITATION: 9 a.m. until time of services Tuesday in the funeral home.
MEMORIALS: Payson Volunteer Fire Department.
