He enlisted as a 19 yr. old resident of Toolesborough, Louisa Co., Ia. on July 1, 1861 in Co. C, 5th Iowa Infantry.
He deserted March 1,1863 at Memphis, Tn. He then enlisted Aug.23,1864, under the alias Albert B. Cole, in Co. D, 40th Missouri Infantry. Mustered out with the Co. Aug.8,1865. (his pension records also claim service in Co. H, 29th U.S. Infantry).
He filed for an invalid pension March 10,1890 receiving certificate # 565.235. According to the 1897 Veteran Roster of the 5th Iowa he died at Muscatine, Iowa on March 14,1891.
His widow, Catharine A., filed for a widow's pension on Aug.31,1891 in Ohio. She received certificate # 320.620.
