Born in Vt. He came to Iowa with his family by covered wagon in 1853. They settled near present day Cotter, Ia. He enlisted as a 19 yr. old July 1,1861 in Co. C, 5th Iowa Infantry. Detailed as Co. teamster in Oct.1861. Re-enlisted Jan.5,1864, consolidated Aug.8,1864 and transferred Sept.18,1864 to Co. G, 5th Iowa Cavalry. Mustered out at Nashville, Tn. on Aug.11,1865.
Married Miss Samantha "Mattie" E. Boden in Iowa in 1866. They had two sons, William H. and Anderson Clyde. Charles filed for an invalid pension on Oct.16,1882 and received certificate # 314.685. In 1900 they were living in Washington, Ia. Charles was 57 yrs. old and employed as constable. In 1910 they were still in Washington, Ia. and Charles age 66, was employed as county tax assessor?
Charles died at Washington, Ia. in May 1919 and was buried at Elm Grove Cemetery. His widow filed for a widow's pension on May 24,1919 and received certificate # 880.041.
