Enlisted as a 19 yr. old resident of Strawberry Hill, Muscatine Co., Ia. on July 1,1861 in Co. C, 5th Iowa Infantry at Columbus City, Louisa Co., Ia. Severely wounded in the hip Sept.19,1862 at the Battle of Iuka, Ms. Listed on Co. return dated Oct.31,1862 as "absent in hospital at Jefferson Barracks, Mo." Promoted from the ranks to 4th Corp. of Co. C Sept.16,1863. Returned to the ranks at his request in Oct.1863. Mustered out May 15,1864 and transferred to Co. H, 21 V.R.C. William files for an invalid pension on Aug.3,1869 and receives certificate # 110.017.
Marries Eliza Jane Brady April 9,1875 in Vermillion, Clay Co., S.D.
William dies Oct.2,1925 in Toledo, Ohio. His obituary appears in the Oct.9,1925 edition of the "Brander Advocate" of Brander, Ohio.
William's wife, Eliza Jane, file for a widow's pension on Nov.13,1925 and receives certificate # 970.220.
