Enlisted as a 24yr. old resident of Muscatine Co. Ia. on June 24,1861 in Co. A, 5th Iowa Infantry. Discharged for disability Jan.17,1861 at Syracuse, Mo.
Enlisted Aug.17,1863 and mustered in Aug.24,1863 as 6th Sgt. in Co. K, 8th Iowa Cavalry. Captured Dec.20,1863 and murdered Dec.22,1863 while in the hands of guerrillas. This occurred while the 8th Iowa Cavalry was patrolling the counties of Humphreys, Stewart, Dickson, Montgomery, Cheatham, Hickman, Perry, and Williamson Tennessee. (Found in Vol. 1, 1867 Iowa Adj. Gen. Report).It is presumed he was buried where he was murdered as his body was never found.
