Enlisted as 21 yr. old resident of Marshall Co., Ia. (first name given as "Edwin") at Marshalltown on July 1, 1861 as a musician in Co. D, 5th Iowa Infantry. Promoted 8th Corp. Oct. 21, 1862 and 3rd Corp. Feb. 28, 1863. In Iowa on sick furlough of 30 days since Aug. 21, 1863 on Co. return dated Nov. 30, 1863. Listed on 1897 roster as, "Musician captured Nov. 25, 1863 at Battle of Mission Ridge, Tn. Died in prison at Belle Isle, Va. Dec. 27, 1863 and buried there. Moved after war to National Cemetery at Richmond, Va. and buried in Section D, Grave 36.
